Football Star’s Trial Set to Begin Today
The felony weapons trial of all-state football player Leodes Van Buren is scheduled to start today, since acting Ventura County Superior Court Judge Bruce A. Clark has seated a jury in the case.
Van Buren, the state’s leader in receptions and receiving yardage at Newbury Park High, is charged with firing a gunshot into his girlfriend’s home in April.
The felony weapons charge stems from Van Buren’s April 8 arrest on suspicion of firing a shot through the back door of Marcie James’ home that morning after an argument with her.
The 18-year-old reported the incident to a 911 emergency operator and admitted firing the shot. But the next day he denied having pulled the trigger, saying a companion had done it.
