Embassy Warns of Threat to Americans in Algeria
The State Department warned Wednesday that an attack or kidnaping of Americans in Algeria may be planned and urged U.S. citizens there to exercise caution.
A security advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy in Algiers said, “We are not in a position to determine the veracity of the information but believe that all such threats should be taken seriously. . . . We also remind all Americans that the State Department’s travel warning for Algeria recommends that Americans whose circumstances do not afford them effective protection depart Algeria.”
About 4,000 people, mainly security forces personnel and militants, have been killed in Algeria’s civil strife--triggered by the scrapping of a general election in January, 1992, which the now-outlawed Islamic Salvation Front was poised to win.
