Muslim rebels killed 12 government soldiers and captured 10 more in one of the heaviest battles of recent weeks in the troubled Central Asian nation.

The clash took place near the village of Khait, about 125 miles east of the capital of Dushanbe, news reports said Wednesday. The reports did not say when the fighting occurred.

Tajikistan’s Russian-backed government, led by Imomali Rakhmonov, has been battling Muslim militants in a civil war that claimed an estimated 20,000 lives through last year before quieting down at the beginning of 1994. It has heated up again in the past few months.
