Kevin Carter; Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photographer

Kevin Carter, 33, whose photograph of a vulture standing near a starving Sudanese child won a 1994 Pulitzer Prize. The photo was first published by the New York Times and then distributed around the world by news and photo agencies. In May, Carter attended the Pulitzer award ceremony in New York to collect his prize for best feature photograph during the preceding year. “He was an extraordinarily courageous photographer dedicated to his work,” said Anton Harber, editor of the Weekly Mail and Guardian newspaper, where Carter once worked as photo editor. “I think the picture that won him the Pulitzer was a truly remarkable one which will add to his memory.” Carter worked almost a decade as a broadcaster and photographer for South African newspapers until deciding to become a free-lancer in 1993. He then worked for Reuters, Agence France-Press and other organizations, and sold several news photos to the Associated Press.
