Don’t Need Dumps

Share

The Times enlightened us all with the trashy thoughts of our benevolent Solid Waste Management Chairman Scott Montgomery (“3 Firms to Join Bidding for County’s Trash,” July 22). His wisdom:

“We dispose of our trash in our own back yard. We live with it in our own back yard, and we live with it because it’s our garbage. Why can’t Ojai and Ventura dispose of their trash in their back yard?”

The answer to Scott and the other east county politicians who seek hegemony over the Weldon Canyon site through their duplicitous promotion of the Taconic Resources-sponsored Weldon landfill initiative is easy--we don’t want or need another stinking dump in our back yard.

Thorough studies have shown--and now the proposal from Laidlaw to use the existing Chiquito Canyon landfill, BFI’s proposal to rail-haul trash to a superior landfill in Arizona and other proposals to rail-haul trash to a secure Utah landfill demonstrate--that the market can now bring forth environmentally superior and, equally important, more cost-effective and economic waste disposal solutions than an unwanted Weldon Canyon dump.
