Nation IN BRIEF : OHIO : 5 Inmates Indicted in Fatal Prison Riot
Five inmates were indicted on murder charges in the strangling of a guard during a riot at the maximum-security prison in Lucasville. Robert Vallandingham, 40, and nine inmates were killed during the 11-day standoff in April at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. More than 43 inmates have been indicted on various charges stemming from the riot. The indictments were the first involving murder in Vallandingham’s death. The five were also charged with kidnaping Vallandingham, and a sixth inmate was charged with conspiracy. One inmate also was charged with killing five prisoners. The inmates could be sentenced to death if convicted.
