GAO Investigation of Nasdaq Glitches Requested: The House of Representatives telecommunications and finance subcommittee asked the General Accounting Office, Congress’ investigative body, to look into the circumstances surrounding the technical problems that have disrupted the Nasdaq trading system several times in the past 2 1/2 weeks and find out what can be done to prevent their occurring again. The panel oversees U.S. securities markets. Nasdaq trades the stocks of about 4,800 companies. A spokesman for Nasdaq, which is operated by the National Assn. of Securities Dealers, a self-regulatory organization, said, “We will be working with them to get their job done” and that Nasdaq has been conducting its own review of the matter.
