VENICE : Galanter Urges City to Block Redevelopment Project
Residents fighting a proposed redevelopment of the 795-unit Lincoln Place apartments found a powerful ally Wednesday when Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter formally announced her opposition to the project.
In a standing-room-only hearing before a panel of city officials, Galanter urged the city to block a developer’s request to demolish apartments for low- and moderate-income tenants and build market-value condominiums on the 40-acre site in Venice.
The redevelopment “would change Lincoln Place from a mixed community to one that, by economic necessity, excludes the elderly on fixed incomes and younger families starting up,” Galanter said in an interview.
Jim Merlino, vice president of TransAction Companies Ltd., predicted eventual victory for the $150-million project. “We think it’s just the beginning of the (approval) process,” he said.
