VAN NUYS : Listing of Smoke-Free Nightclubs Planned

Share

As a healthy alternative to the respiratory nightmare of the smoke-filled nightclub scene, the Van Nuys unit of the American Cancer Society has announced that it is publishing a Smokefree Entertainment Directory next month.

The nonsmoker’s yellow pages will list nightclubs, jazz clubs and other entertainment spots that have a smoke-free policy. The society is also recruiting businesses to designate their establishments smoke-free part of the time.

The directory will include a free listing of any entertainment venue that will declare itself smoke-free one business day during the week and one business day per month on the weekend, remove ashtrays from the premises on those days and prominently display a nonsmoking sign.

According to a cancer society release, 80% of adults do not smoke and may be more likely to attend clubs if they have smoke-free environments.

Applications for inclusion in the directory, which will primarily target San Fernando Valley businesses, will be accepted until Aug. 20, said Herm Perlmutter, associate executive director with the society’s San Fernando Valley unit.

More than 3,000 copies of the directory will be printed and distributed at hotels, college bookstores, professional schools and community organizations.
