Fire Destroys Three Apartment Units

Ten people were left temporarily homeless Saturday after a fire destroyed three attached apartments in the Islander Luxury Apartment complex, authorities said.

When the first of six engine companies arrived at 3:41 p.m. at the complex at 2724 N. Bristol St., firefighters found the roof of the single-story apartments engulfed in flames, said Art Del Gaudio, acting battalion chief of the Santa Ana Fire Department.

It took firefighters 45 minutes to control the blaze, which, because of the wind, touched off several small spot fires on nearby roofs in the complex, including one a quarter-mile away, Del Gaudio said.

Firefighters quickly controlled the spot fires and prevented them from doing serious damage, Del Gaudio said.

“A couple of palm trees started burning and they were sending embers all over the place in the wind,” Del Gaudio said.

Damage to the apartments--which all share the same roof--were estimated at more than $200,000. Del Gaudio said investigators have determined that the fire started in the one vacant apartment of the three, but the cause remains under investigation.
