BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : There’s No Corralling Mondesi at First

Raul Mondesi scored the Dodgers’ third run in their 6-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies, but, as usual, it wasn’t routine.

Mondesi led off the second inning with a single to short right field, but didn’t stop running, sliding into second base safely with a double. “I heard (first base coach Reggie Smith) yelling, ‘No, no, don’t go,’ ” Mondesi said. “What do I have now, 27 doubles? I want to get two more before the strike.”

Smith said this was about the third time Mondesi has ignored his instructions at first base. “He’s like a mustang,” Smith said.

Center fielder Brett Butler will support that.

In the second inning, Charlie Hayes hit a fly ball to right-center field that Butler and Mondesi converged on. Butler called for it and ended up making a lunging catch.

“The wind was blowing from right to left and blew it back in, plus I didn’t know if a truck was about to hit me too. You never know with that kid out there,” Butler said.

In the fourth inning, Mondesi tried to reach third base from first on a single to short left field by Rafael Bournigal. He was thrown out by about three feet. “He can run, but he can’t fly,” Coach Manny Mota said.

Ismael Valdes has pitched in six of the last nine games and has given up only three runs and eight hits in 11 innings. Todd Worrell, who had given up no runs and three hits in his last five outings, saw his streak end Sunday in the ninth inning, giving up a single to Dante Bichette and a run-scoring triple to Joe Girardi.
