Two Computer Firms to Merge: Storage Technology Corp. and Network Systems Corp., suppliers of computer storage and data communication systems, said they have agreed to merge in a stock swap valued at about $300 million. Storage Technology said the merger is believed to be the first of a major computer storage provider and a leader in high-performance computer networking products. The goal is for users of workstations or personal computers to have access to massive amounts of data stored in mainframe computers. The technology to facilitate moving data among different systems is Network Systems’ enterprise routing switch, being developed jointly with Northern Telecom.
