ALHAMBRA: A firefighters’ pancake breakfast at a fire station has ignited controversy after one City Council candidate said she was ejected while other candidates were able to use the event as a photo opportunity. Elizabeth Mack, who is running against Paul Talbot for the open 5th District seat, said her 1st Amendment rights were violated when firefighters ejected her from the facility for distributing political flyers. While Mack was being ejected, Mayor Boyd G. Condie, incumbent Councilwoman Barbara A. Messina, 1st District candidate Mark Paulson and Talbot turned pancakes for photographers. Paulson and Talbot are allies of the incumbents. The breakfast was held to support a foundation for burn victims.

DUARTE: The City Council has withdrawn a November ballot measure that would have allowed voters to decide whether to implement a 3% utility tax. Responding to the decision, leaders of the Duarte Taxpayers Group said they will stage a recall effort against the entire council if it tries to implement the tax without a citywide vote.

TEMPLE CITY: Hugh Riley, who has served as city manager for Hollister, Calif., and Tucumcari, N.M., will take over as the city’s chief executive before Sept. 1, Mayor Harry Budds said. In closed session, the City Council selected Riley, 45, to replace Denise Ovrom, who resigned from the position in April. Riley, a 20-year municipal employee and Vietnam War veteran, was Hollister’s city manager until April, when he resigned after a new council was elected.
