WESTMINSTER : Speed Limit Signs Ordered by Council
More speed limit signs will be installed on 15th Street warning motorists to slow down and be aware of children who might be playing on the street.
The City Council this week approved the Traffic Commission’s recommendation to install the 25-m.p.h. speed limit signs.
Last month, a toddler was killed by a car as she strayed onto the street.
A proposal by Councilman Tony Lam to install speed bumps was rejected because as many as 3,000 cars use 15th Street every day, making them impractical, said Peter Mackprang, an associate city engineer.
The bumps would lower the speed to about 32 m.p.h., Mackprang said in a report to the council. The speed limit in the neighborhood is 25 m.p.h. but most motorists go faster, officials said.
But with more signs and stricter police enforcement of the speed limit, accidents could be avoided, he said. The street, which runs from Monroe Street to Newland Street, is faced on both sides by rows of apartments.
