Hewlett-Packard Stock Soars Nearly 10%: The computer maker reported surprisingly strong third-quarter earnings, sending its stock up $8.50 to $87.625 on New York Stock Exchange volume of more than 1.7 million shares. Analysts said profit was helped by a variety of factors, including strong revenue growth and a 27% year-over-year increase in orders, unexpectedly strong for a seasonally slow quarter. The company reported earnings for the quarter ended July 31 of $347 million, or $1.33 a share, on revenue of $6.05 billion. A year earlier it earned $271 million, or $1.06 a share, on revenue of $4.96 billion.
