U.S. Expands Genentech Probe: The federal government is widening its investigation into questionable marketing practices by the company to sell its growth drug for children, a congressional official said. The Food and Drug Administration has said it was probing Genentech Inc., a large South San Francisco-based bio-pharmaceuticals firm, and the Federal Trade Commission has been asked to look into the company’s marketing practices. A House subcommittee, which is investigating Genentech as well as the practices of a charitable foundation linked to the firm, plans hearings later this year. A member of the panel’s staff noted questions about kickbacks of tens of thousands of dollars allegedly paid to at least one doctor for prescribing Protropin.
