MONROVIA : Police, Merchants Team in Bike Safety Program

Share

Monrovia Police officers will be on the lookout for kids wearing their bicycle helmets. Every child they find will receive a special ticket that will have words of thanks and encouragement from the issuing police officer. The effort is part of a bicycle safety program that started in June.

Project HELP, or The Helmet, Education and Law Program, was designed to promote good habits in young bicycle riders. The program encourages them to wear their bicycle helmets in accordance with a law that requires all riders under 18 to wear helmets by Jan. 1, 1995.

The program is supported by a dozen local businesses that offer awards for kids who visit their stores and present their ticket. Plans to expand the ongoing program will depend on its initial success.
