La Canada Flintridge

James D. Barber of La Canada Flintridge has been named president of the Hospital Council of Southern California, the largest metropolitan hospital association in the nation. Barber is only the fourth president to serve the 71-year-old organization, succeeding Stephen W. Gamble, who has retired.

Formerly executive vice president, Barber has written a number of essays on health reform and is considered a leading authority on the subject. He previously served as administrator of Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina and assistant director of Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.

Arcadia

Arcadia real estate broker Nancy Dorn has been named president of the Arcadia Sunrise Rotary Club. A member of the club since 1989, Dorn twice won the annual Paul Lambert leadership award. She also is active in the Arcadia Assistance League and the Creative Arts Group Alliance.

Pomona

Stephen W. Graeber, vice president of Davis and Graeber Insurance Services Inc. of Pomona, has been named president of the Rotary Club of Pomona. He has been a Rotarian since 1981 and joined the Pomona club in 1987.

Pasadena

Verna Blakely of Altadena and Ben Hughes of Pasadena have been honored for their 22 years of service at the Hope Chest Thift Shop in Pasadena as members of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Also honored at the RSVP Volunteer Recognition luncheon were Kathleen Gill of Pasadena, who has been volunteering for 21 years, and 20-year volunteer Martha Peterson of Alhambra, along with the more than 600 volunteers who donate their time to numerous charities through the program.

Robert H. Grubbs and Shrinivas Kulkarni of Caltech have been accepted as fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The academy, a 200-year-old organization founded by John Adams, is dedicated to the exchange of ideas and promotion of knowledge for the public interest.

Grubbs is Caltech’s Victor and Elizabeth Atkins professor of chemistry. Kulkarni is a professor of astronomy.

Assistant Prof. Erin Schuman of Caltech has been selected to receive a research fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in New York.

The foundation recently selected 100 top scientists and economists to receive grants of $30,000 each. Fellows are free to use the grant for any research in their subject area.

The average age of fellows is 32. The foundation rewards scientists in the early stages of their careers.

Peter Dervan, a Caltech professor for 21 years and principal investigator for the biomolecular design resource center, has been named chairman of the university’s Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Dervan, who earned a doctorate from Yale University, is a leading DNA researcher.

Glendora

Mary Lou Lundstrom was honored as Glendora’s 1993 Citizen of the Year at a banquet hosted by the Chamber of Commerce.

Lundstrom was honored for her many years of service to organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Glendora Safety Committee, San Gabriel Coalition for Education and East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupational Center. She has served on the board of trustees with the Glendora Unified School District for 17 years and was an election poll worker for 32 years.

Lundstrom and her husband, John, have lived in Glendora for 33 years and have two children.
