Longtime St. Boniface Pastor Quatannens Dies

The Rev. Monsignor John Quatannens, longtime pastor of St. Boniface Church in Anaheim, died Friday. He was 85.

Born in Belgium in 1909, Quatannens was graduated from the American College of Louvain University in Belgium and ordained as a priest on Dec. 21, 1936. He arrived in Southern California in 1937.

As a young priest, Quatannens served as an assistant pastor in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He later served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army, under the command of Gen. George Patton, during the Battle of the Bulge, and in the Air Force during the Korean War.

In 1958, he was appointed pastor at St. Boniface, and he served there until his retirement in 1971. He was named monsignor in 1977.

Funeral liturgy will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface, 120 N. Janss St., Anaheim, with a rite of committal Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange.
