On Love, Marriage and Catholicism

Well, that mean ol’ Catholic Church is at it again (“They Say Love Conquers All--Will It Now?” Aug. 8). Imagine--trying to uphold their standards regarding such little ol’ things as marriage and Catholic education. The nerve of them.

Gosh--to think that he likes rock and she likes the Chicago Bulls. After all, he wooed her with “corny lines” and they spend their evenings planted in “a spongy green couch playing video games, betting quarters on cards.” That surely demonstrates that Jennifer, age 17, and Caesar, age 25, have mastered what The Times regards as the requirements of marriage.

And those mean ol’ priests. Just look at Father Gregory Coiro. I mean, he’s “sober robed” and a “big, ruddy-faced man with a serious gaze.” Well, who you gonna trust, anyhow--someone like that? I mean Father Coiro must be right out of Charles Dickens.
