Whirlpool to Sell European-Style Washers in U.S.: The company said building the energy-efficient machines for the U.S. market in 1996 will beat new government standards by three years. It said it will spend at least $40 million initially to convert production for the new model, which tumbles clothes like a dryer and uses about one-third of the water and energy that a conventional washing machine requires. It did not announce the production site or volume. Environmental groups praised the announcement.
