An allegedly obsessed fan who tried to enter Madonna’s Hollywood Hills estate and claimed to be her husband was sentenced Tuesday to a year in jail after pleading no contest to criminal charges.

Todd Michael Lawrence, 26, a drifter whose Arizona hometown was not known, appeared before Municipal Judge Michael Mink and pleaded no contest to battery on a police officer and attempted entry into a building.

He unexpectedly entered the pleas to both misdemeanor counts just before opening arguments were scheduled to begin in his trial, said Deputy City Atty. Mark Lambert. A jury was selected Monday. If convicted on both counts, he could have received up to 30 months in prison.

Lawrence has been in custody in lieu of $13,000 bail since his arrest July 19. The judge ordered him to immediately begin serving the sentence.

Lawrence was arrested at Madonna’s Hollywood Hills home after security guard Basil Stephens allegedly saw him scale an estate security fence. The battery charge grew out of an altercation Lawrence had with officers during the booking process. Lawrence spat on the officers and attempted to kick them, Lambert said.
