Senator Will End His NRA Membership

The National Rifle Assn. suffered another congressional defection Tuesday.

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (D-Colo.) disclosed that he will not be renewing his membership in the 2.5-million-member NRA.

On Sunday, Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), a longtime member of the NRA’s board of directors, had announced in a dramatic speech on the House floor that he was resigning from the board and then voted in favor of the crime bill with its ban on assault weapons.

Campbell, in an interview to be published in today’s Denver Post, protested what he called “strong-arm tactics” of the NRA.

“The only way they (the NRA) can lobby is through threats and intimidation,” said the first-term senator, who supported the ban on assault weapons but said he would continue to oppose other gun control measures, such as national registration.
