Talks on Assault Weapon Ban Stall
A bill to broaden California’s assault weapon ban was stalled in an Assembly committee Wednesday when lawmakers ran out of time to hear all the proposals before them.
Members of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee are expected to take up the proposal for a critical vote today.
The bill, authored by state Sen. David A. Roberti (D-Van Nuys) to plug loopholes in an existing ban of assault weapons, would add a generic description of the guns to the law.
Distributors and manufacturers had been getting around the ban, which banishes certain firearms, by changing the name or design of military-style assault weapons.
If the bill passes the committee, its next test will be on the Assembly floor. Then, if it passes, it will go to the governor’s desk for his signature or veto.
