LOS ANGELES : 22-City Bike Trek Planned to Benefit AIDS Care-Givers

Hoping to raise half a million dollars for AIDS service providers, local activists Thursday announced plans for a 22-city, fund-raising bicycle trek across the United States.

The ride will begin in Los Angeles on Sept. 24 and end in New York on Nov. 18, said Maureen Simkins, who will lead the first AIDS Ride Across America.

“Whatever we raise, it’s OK with me because I know that we’re there to carry a message, and that’s clearly the intent,” said Simkins, who is also the president of the Los Angeles Center for Living, a nonprofit support organization.

“It’s not just a fund-raiser, it’s to get communities in America together,” she said.

About 175 riders have signed up for the trip’s first leg through Southern California. The event will begin at the Pacific Design Center on Melrose Avenue. Riders will cover about 70 miles each day, Simkins said.
