THEIR LEAGUE: A new baseball league makes its debut here with three games today. It’s the Women’s National Adult Baseball Assn., beginning its first season. Playing in the first game at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove is Pepper’s Peaches, named after their backer, Pepper Davis, 70, of Van Nuys, a star in the short-lived women’s pro league that was a basis for the movie “A League of Their Own.” . . . . Davis is excited to be back in baseball: “We’re here to put the joy back into the game.”
HIGH OPERA: If you didn’t make it to see the Big Three--Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras--in concert at Dodger Stadium in June, you can catch their act for free Monday night at Triangle Square in Costa Mesa. . . . A tape of the concert will be shown on an outdoor screen in the shopping center’s town square at 10 p.m. Afterward, the Virgin Megastore will keep its doors open to midnight, if you want to be among the first to purchase the concert in video, CD or cassette form--official first sale day is Tuesday.
BIGGER SAIGON: On Monday, Santa Ana-based Little Saigon Radio--heard here on 96.7 KWIZ--begins syndicating to Houston. Vietnamese Texans will get news, talk shows, religion and music--all broadcast in their native language. Plans are in the making to syndicate the program in other cities across the nation. . . . Says Trang Nguyen, president of the radio program: “This means we’ll be bringing the entire Vietnamese community abroad together.”
CRYING FOWL: When Knott’s Berry Farm built a pond next to its Independence Hall, it didn’t expect to become a duck farm. Now there are about 200 ducks--many of them dropped off as unwanted pets by their owners. People often drop off chickens too. . . . “Some people think of Knott’s as an animal orphanage,” grouses spokesman Bob Ochsner. But the amusement park has made them its own: when it had to drain the lake temporarily this summer, it moved the ducks to a lake in Camp Snoopy.
