ROUNDUP : Hatoof Upsets Flawlessly in the Beverly D

Hatoof, a 5-year-old French mare, surged from seventh place to defeat defending champion Flawlessly by a half-length and win the $500,000 Beverly D at Arlington International Racecourse on Saturday.

“This was very special,” said Walter Swinburn, Hatoof’s jockey. “I wasn’t worried when we were sitting back behind the leaders. She’s a special mare. I let her run the race herself.”

Christiane Head, who became the first female trainer to win the Beverly D, said, “Hatoof is a mare that likes to go her own way.” Head is the eldest of three daughters of French trainer and breeder Alec Head.

Hatoof paid $7.80, $4.40 and $3.40 and was timed in 1:55 2/5 for the 1 3/16 miles on turf. She earned $300,000 to increase her earnings to nearly $1.5 million for owner Maktoum Al Maktoum of Dubai.

Colonial Affair held off Devil His Due by a head to win the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, only his second victory since the 1993 Belmont Stakes.

Favored Thunder Rumble, winner of the Jim Dandy and Travers in 1992 and this year’s Saratoga Cup in his only previous starts at Saratoga, never contended and finished a distant fifth.

Colonial Affair, ridden by Jose Santos, covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48 3/5 and paid $19.60, $7.60 and $5.20. Devil His Due, top-weighted at 125 pounds and ridden by Mike Smith, returned $4 and $2.80. West By West, ridden by Pat Day, paid $3.80.

Julie Krone rode Copper Mount to a record-setting two-length victory over Kristen’s Baby in the $125,000 New York Derby at the Finger Lakes Race Track.

Copper Mount set a track record of 1:48 4/5 in the 1 1/8-mile race for New York-bred 3-year-olds. It was his fourth victory in eight starts.

Copper Mount paid $2.80, $2.10 and $2.10.
