COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : USC : Woods Looks West at Trojan Career

Share

USC is in the hunt for one of the nation’s top-rated high school quarterbacks, Quincy Woods of Park Forest, Ill.

Woods, 6 feet 2 and 185 pounds, also is being recruited by Notre Dame but has narrowed his possible choices to Florida State, Nebraska, North Carolina and USC, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Trojan quarterback Rob Johnson is a senior. The backups are sophomores Brad Otton and Matt Koffler. Junior Kyle Wachholtz is academically ineligible this year and has one season remaining.

One NFL player personnel director, Bob Ackles of the Arizona Cardinals, rates two Trojans, quarterback Johnson and offensive tackle Tony Boselli, as potential first-round choices in the next draft.

“With a good year, there’s no reason why Johnson shouldn’t be a first-round pick,” Ackles said.

“Two other possible early quarterback picks, the way things stand now, would be Eric Zeier (of Georgia) and Steve McNair (of Alcorn State).

“Johnson’s big pluses are his short-to-medium accuracy. His deep-ball accuracy isn’t great yet, but it’s good. His running ability is a negative, but a lot of good quarterbacks don’t run well.

“Boselli’s pluses are obvious: Outstanding size (at 6-7 1/2 and 320), very quick set-up on pass blocking, poise.”

Freshman wide receiver Ken Haslip injured a knee in practice Wednesday and still is undergoing evaluation.
