Before Las Vegas arose and Donald Trump achieved new heights (or depths) of vulgarity, Atlantic City offered vacationing Americans amusements, publicity stunts and pageants. Established in the 1850s as a resort for Philadelphians, Atlantic City quickly became a place for fads. In 1915, James Huneker wrote, “Atlantic City is not a treat for the introspective . . . it is hard, glittering, unspeakably cacophonous, and it never sleeps at all.” Levi and Eisenberg chronicle some noteworthy events in the city’s colorful past.
