LIBRARY RETURN: When Eugene Wright of Perris recently lost his purse at the Santa Ana Library--with $304 inside--police gave him a 1% chance of ever seeing it again. But it showed up in his mail--with $300, and a note from Mary V. Napolitano of Santa Ana. She wrote almost apologetically that she shorted him the $4--to cover postage to mail it back to him. . . . She said she grabbed the purse to keep someone else from stealing it. She declined his reward offer: “I didn’t do it to get anything back.”

SERRA FACE LIFT: Serra Chapel is California’s oldest church and the only remaining structure in which Father Junipero Serra said Mass. . . . This month, work crews resume renovation of the 216-year-old chapel at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Gerald Miller, the mission administrator, said one of the chapel’s features, adobe, has also been its bane. “Adobe structures are constantly absorbing moisture and deteriorating.” Care will be taken, he said, to protect delicate wall motifs that are original drawings.

FAVORITE SON: Cypress is going to roll out a hometown welcome Thursday for one of its younger celebrities, Tiger Woods. . . . Woods, 18, recently became the youngest ever to win the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship. The city is holding a free, open-to-everyone reception for him. Said Councilwoman Joyce C. Nicholson: “He is just a wonderful young man. It’s a pleasure to have him as a resident.” Reception is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Cypress Golf Club.
