SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : City Considers Boost in Parking Fines

Share

Parking illegally may soon be more expensive under a city proposal to raise fines. The City Council today is scheduled to consider increasing fines for most parking tickets from $27 to $32.

But illegally parking in a handicapped zone would be the most expensive. The city’s proposal is to increase the fine from $102 to $275.

Paul Sullivan, the city’s chief of police services, said the proposed increases would make San Juan Capistrano comparable to other South Orange County cities. “All we are trying to do is get to a level that is consistent with surrounding cities,” Sullivan said.

In 1993, the city’s police services issued 3,692 parking citations for such things as expired parking meters, parking in no parking zones, or parking on the street for more than 72 hours.

The proposed increases are expected to bring an annual revenue boost of about $18,000, if the same amount of citations are issued again this year, Sullivan said.
