PacBell Says New Area Code Nearly Due: Telephone area code 562 will be activated sooner than expected, perhaps within a year, because 310 numbers are going fast, said Gene Sherman, Pacific Bell vice president. “The demand for numbers in 310 has been spectacular, particularly for cellular and paging services,” he said. “It’s undeniable proof that people want to call and be called in every setting.” Bellcore, the telecommunications organization monitoring the North American Numbering Plan, has warned that 310 is “in jeopardy,” which means demand may exceed the code’s capacity before a new one can be added.
