OXNARD : Tentative Accord Averts Dump Strike

A regional trash authority has reached a tentative contract with workers at the Bailard Landfill, averting a possible strike.

The Ventura County Regional Sanitation District, which operates the Oxnard-area dump, and the Service Employees International Union, which represents 34 workers at the landfill, came to terms Wednesday on a three-year contract.

Terms of the agreement were not immediately disclosed because details have not been worked out, Personnel Manager Arlene Morrelli said.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” she said. “It’s not quite over.”

Union representatives did not return calls.

Workers are set to vote on the proposed contract Friday, and the results will be released Monday or Tuesday, Morrelli said.

The sanitation district and union have been discussing a contract for the workers since February. The union had voted to strike if necessary, and the district had vowed to hire outside workers to keep the dump open.
