Group Seeks Ban on Leg Cramp Drug: Public Citizen’s Health Research Group asked the Food and Drug Administration to immediately ban quinine sulfate, a prescription drug for nighttime leg cramps, citing reports that it is dangerous as well as ineffective. The drug is sold in prescription and over-the-counter forms. The FDA announced last month that it would ban the sale of non-prescription forms next Feb. 22. The agency has received reports of adverse reactions, including deaths, disablement and hospitalization. The consumer group contends the prescription form is just as dangerous and should be removed from the market immediately. It is sold under the brand name Quinamm as well as in several generic versions.
