Many of the trendy locales White mentions in “Material Child” are depicted in this lush guide. Like Los Angeles, Tokyo is an imperfectly melded collection of smaller cities with no real center, although the extensive rapid transit system allows people to move about quickly and safely. Richie’s upbeat text reads a bit too much like a travel brochure, but Simmon’s glorious photographs will delight readers who hope to visit the Orient.
