REGIONAL ROUNDUP : N.C. State Surprises Clemson

North Carolina State knocked off No. 22 Clemson, 29-12, Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson, S.C., the worst home loss for the Tigers in 14 years.

North Carolina State, 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, piled up 493 yards and held Clemson (1-1, 0-1) to 183 yards and one offensive score--a 13-yard touchdown reception by freshman Kenya Crooks with three minutes to play.

Eddie Goines set a school record with his 15th and 16th touchdown receptions, one on a 76-yard play, and finished with three catches for 108 yards.

Georgia Tech 45, Western Carolina 26--Tommy Luginbill, the son of former San Diego State coach Al Luginbill, threw four second-half touchdown passes--two to Derrick Steagall--and the Yellow Jackets held off the stubborn Division I-AA Catamounts at Atlanta.

Luginbill, a junior college transfer from Palomar, completed 19 of 37 passes for 280 yards. After going seven of 20 for 62 yards in the first half, he connected on 12 of 17 for 218 in the second.

A bad snap on a punt set up the winning field goal for Duke in a 13-10 nonconference victory over East Carolina at Durham, N.C. East Carolina, after missing on third-and-eight at its 47, was going to punt, but the snap sailed over the head of punter Matt Levine, who downed the ball at the Pirate 15. Duke moved to the 10, from where Tom Cochran kicked a 28-yard field goal. . . . Mike Groh, making his first college start, threw three touchdown passes to Tyrone Davis and ran for another score to lead Virginia (1-1) to a 47-10 nonconference victory over Navy at Annapolis.

EAST

Rutgers 17, West Virginia 12--The Mountaineers, 11-0 in the regular season last year, fell to 1-2 by losing to the Scarlet Knights at Piscataway, N.J. Rutgers (2-0) scored twice within a six-second span in the third quarter, first on a four-yard touchdown pass from Ray Lucas to backup tight end Jason Curry and then on a 24-yard interception return by Alcides Catanho.

Backup Billy West, who came into the game in the second quarter, rushed for 226 yards and a touchdown in 26 carries to lead Pittsburgh (1-1) to a 30-16 nonconference victory over Ohio University at Pittsburgh. West, who is from Ohio, replaced Curtis Martin, who suffered a slightly sprained ankle in the second quarter. West had to leave the game in the fourth quarter when he was shaken up. Martin gained 251 yards in Pitt’s season-opening loss to Texas. Pitt ended a 10-game home-field losing streak. . . . Army had 382 yards rushing and 442 overall against overmatched Division I-AA Holy Cross and won, 49-3, at West Point, N.Y. Army quarterback Rick Roper is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

SOUTH

Ryan Roskelly, from Valencia High and Fullerton College, returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown and set a school record with 10 punt returns for 194 yards in leading Memphis to a 42-18 victory at Tulsa. Roskelly also had six receptions for 174. He had a 49-yard touchdown catch and receptions of 41 and 60 yards that led to touchdowns for the Tigers (1-1), who scored 21 points in the third quarter after trailing 18-7 at halftime. . . . Jason Cooper ran for 106 yards and Jason Armstrong rushed for 96 in leading Louisiana Tech (1-1) to a 32-7 victory over Houston (0-2) in a nonconference game at Ruston, La.

WESTERN ATHLETIC

Texas Christian 44, New Mexico 29--Junior halfback Andre Davis ran for 325 yards, including a school record 87-yard touchdown, to lead the Horned Frogs in a nonconference game at Albuquerque, N.M.

The 325 yards in 31 carries by Davis is the most ever against New Mexico, surpassing the 316 yards that Emmitt Smith gained against the Lobos for Florida in 1989.

Davis’ big night also was the second best in TCU history, just short of the 343 yards by Tony Jeffrey against Tulane in 1986.

New Mexico quarterback Stoney Case completed a career-high 37 of 62 passes for 403 yards.

Brigham Young’s running game, which had disappeared, returned for in a 45-21 victory over Air Force in a Western Athletic Conference game at Air Force Academy, Colo. After rushing for just 74 yards in their opener and averaging only 106 yards per game on the ground throughout 1993, the Cougars (2-0, 2-0) generated 280 yards rushing against the Falcons (0-2, 0-2).

BIG WEST

Ken Minor ran for 171 yards and scored two touchdowns to led the Nevada to an 18-0 victory over Arkansas State at Reno in the Big West Conference opener for both teams. Nevada (2-0, 1-0) capitalized on four fumbles lost by Arkansas State (0-2, 0-1). Two bad snaps from center set up a touchdown and accounted for a safety.
