Mexican Independence Day: Friday marks the 184th anniversary of El Grito--”the cry for freedom”--against Spanish rule that was raised on the morning of Sept. 16, 1810, by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla in the town of Dolores. The most significant patriotic holiday in Mexico, it should not be confused with the widely celebrated Cinco de Mayo--Fifth of May--which marks the victory of Mexican fighters over French occupiers in 1862.
