Homes Lose Power When Cable Fails

A portion of Los Alamitos and a small area of Cypress were without electric power for more than three hours Sunday morning when an underground cable failed, a utility spokesman said.

A total of 1,050 Southern California Edison customers, the vast majority of them in residences, lost power about 7:50 a.m. when a feeder cable in the Long Beach area failed, said Ron Whittemore, an Edison spokesman. Most of the homes affected are in the Lakewood, Long Beach and Hawaiian Gardens area, although about 100 homes in Los Alamitos and Cypress and several traffic signals in Los Alamitos also had their power knocked out, Whittemore said.

All power was restored by 11:34 a.m., Whittemore said.

The cause of the outage had not been determined Sunday and remained under investigation, Whittemore said.
