Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer probably will meet with Ram officials during an economic development trip to California that will begin Saturday.

Baltimore Oriole owner Peter G. Angelos, who is heading a group interested in bringing the team to Baltimore, also is expected to be in Los Angeles at the end of the week.

Monday, Schaefer, who has made the return of the NFL to Baltimore a top priority in the remaining days of his administration, declined to comment on the Rams. “As far as I know, I’m going to meet the Disney people,” he said.

Mark Wasserman, secretary of the state’s Department of Economic and Employment Development, said the purpose of the trip is to boost the state’s film and television business. He said he was unaware of any plans to meet with the Rams.

“This has been in the planning for a long time,” he said of the entertainment industry effort.

Angelos was unavailable for comment.

But another source familiar with the governor’s plans said a Rams visit was in the planning.

Heidi Sinclair, a spokeswoman for Ram President John Shaw, also said a courtesy meeting between Schaefer and Shaw was under discussion. “It appears that it is going to take place,” she said.
