Volunteers Sought

If you could spare an afternoon to read to a child, or teach how to paint, sew or crochet, Project S.H.U.E. needs you as a volunteer.

The program, now on its third year, will open again this September to provide after-school activities for children, ages 6 to 9, who live in apartments across the street from the Senior Center.

Senior Center Supervisor Betty Goyne said that about 50 children are expected to participate in the program this year. In the past two years, about 60 students had enrolled in the program, which is funded by a grant from the Hitachi Foundation and community development block grants.

Paid positions are also available. Paid employees work five days a week, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nine seniors and four college students have worked as paid employees in the past two years, she said.

A majority of the students have limited English skills, and some live in homes, where there may be drug abuse or gang activities, Goyne said.

To volunteer, call Goyne or program director Judy Bruland at (714) 895-2878.
