In Bronwen Hruska’s article on the rigged quiz shows (“They Conned America,” Aug. 28), the question that brought about Herbert Stempel’s downfall is quoted as being: “Which movie won the Academy Award for best picture in 1955?” If that is how the question was actually phrased at the time, then Stempel answered correctly: “On the Waterfront.”

On March 30, 1955, the Academy Awards were presented for the best achievements of 1954, and “On the Waterfront” was named the best picture. “Marty” won the award for best picture of 1955 on March 21, 1956.

If the question were phrased “Which movie won the Academy Award for best picture of 1955?” then, indeed, Stempel’s answer would be wrong. But as quoted in The Times, Stempel answered the question correctly.

Reader Sandford is correct. The question, as read on “Twenty-One” and as depicted in the film, asked for the best movie of 1955.
