WAXING THEATRICAL

Share

Since coming to this country from Ireland, I learned the term Indian giver , and I hope that I am not being politically incorrect when I say that City Hall is being just that by considering taking back some of the land “rented” to the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble just so someone can build a carwash detailing facility (Theater Notes, Sept. 11). Come on! Another carwash?

When I hear of some government body making an effort in the “development of the arts,” I shout it from the rooftops. But when I hear the opposite I say shame, and let their individual names be trumpeted across the land. A civilization without culture is a dead civilization.

And who can forget that brilliant orator, Hermann Goering, when he said, “The mere mention of the word culture makes me reach for my revolver.” It is written that he then turned to his wife and said, “To-nacht, Darlink, I am zaking you to ze carvash.” SHAY DUFFIN
