Apple Appeal on Windows Rejected: The decision in Apple Computer Inc.’s nine-year copyright battle against Microsoft Corp. upheld lower-court rulings. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco cleared Microsoft of charges it infringed Apple’s copyright protection with the highly successful Windows software operating system. It also rejected Apple’s claims against Hewlett-Packard Co., which marketed Windows-based software. The appeals court then remanded the case to the lower courts to determine whether Apple should be asked to pay attorney’s fees for Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. The three companies spent millions of dollars fighting the landmark case. None had any immediate comment.
