Ram quarterback Chris Miller, who’s nursing a sore shoulder and ribs, will not throw in practice today, raising more questions about his status for Sunday’s game at Kansas City.

Backup quarterback Chris Chandler will replace Miller as the first-string quarterback in practice today, Coach Chuck Knox said.

“Chandler will get the work that Miller usually gets,” Knox said.

Third-string quarterback Tommy Maddox, who has run the scout squad and was inactive for the first three games, will work with the top offensive units for the first time as a backup. The Rams traded a fourth-round draft pick to the Denver Broncos Aug. 27 to get Maddox, a former UCLA standout.

“Tommy has a live arm and is an accurate thrower,” Knox said. “He has picked up the knowledge of the offense very, very well.”

Miller has come back from two knee surgeries in the last two seasons, missed the exhibition opener because of a sore abdomen and received three pain-killing injections in his rib cage for the Atlanta game.

Sunday, he received an injection for a nerve he pinched in his right shoulder when he was sacked by San Francisco’s Dana Stubblefield in the second quarter of the 49ers’ 34-19 victory at Anaheim Stadium.
