Clinton Sets Japanese Trade Sanctions Deadline: Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono was warned by President Clinton in an hourlong meeting that the United States stands ready to impose sanctions against Japan if Tokyo fails to make sufficient trade concessions by Sept. 30. Despite the tough talk, the U.S. dollar has not moved much in recent trading against the Japanese yen. The Administration set the deadline for Japan to change its government purchasing practices to end alleged discrimination against foreign suppliers of telecommunications and medical products.
