A Senate committee approved a bill Friday to help clear the way for the government to compensate Persian Gulf veterans struck by disabling, unexplained illnesses.

The measure, backed by the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs with bipartisan support, also would allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to find out whether the veterans’ spouses and children are suffering from similar ailments.

The committee also voted to limit cuts in the VA work force to 10,000 positions. The Office of Management and Budget had proposed trimming 27,000 jobs from the VA over five years.
