CRISIS IN THE CARIBBEAN : New U.N. Haiti Envoy Named
A former Algerian foreign minister, Lakhdar Brahimi, will replace Dante Caputo as special U.N. representative for Haiti.
Caputo, a former Argentine foreign minister, resigned last week. He felt sidelined by the latest peace efforts and the mission of former President Jimmy Carter.
The appointment of Brahimi, who has served recently as a U.N. trouble-shooter in Zaire, Yemen and Liberia, was announced Friday by the office of Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
When Brahimi will visit Haiti or how U.N. efforts will mesh with the U.S. presence there is not yet known.
