USC basketball Coach George Raveling was hospitalized Sunday after being injured in a traffic accident.

Raveling, 57, was listed in fair but stable condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center with nine broken ribs and fractures of his collarbone and pelvis, a spokeswoman for County-USC Medical Center said. Later in the evening, Raveling was moved to USC University Hospital.

“He’s alert and he’s been communicating with family and friends,” the spokeswoman said. “He’s under observation and will be so for at least 24 hours.”

Raveling’s Jeep Cherokee collided with a BMW at the intersection of 39th Street and Arlington Avenue at about 8 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Police said Robert Ziehm, the driver of the BMW, also was injured. Ziehm could not be reached for comment.

No charges had been filed as of Sunday night.

Raveling, who in July turned down a coaching offer at Seton Hall to remain at USC, is entering his ninth season with the Trojans and has a 336-292 record in his 22-year college coaching career.

Raveling, who is 115-118 at USC, has led the Trojans to four consecutive post-season berths, with his best season in 1992 when he directed USC to a school record for victories with a 24-6 mark.

“I’m receiving excellent care and I’m confident the doctors will give me the necessary treatment for a speedy recovery,” Raveling said in a statement.

USC is scheduled to open practice on Oct. 15.
