Council OKs 700 New Homes, Cemetery

A plan to build 700 dwellings, a cemetery and a public park on the Douglas Ranch in east Simi Valley was approved unanimously Monday by the City Council.

The cemetery will cover 162 acres of a 381-acre site north of the Simi Valley Freeway between Yosemite Avenue and Kuehner Drive.

Other areas of the parcel will be divided between park and open space areas, houses, and moderate- to high-density apartments.

Simi Valley council members tinkered with the number of units being proposed for a corner of the parcel that faced the freeway, settling on a higher-density project. Otherwise, they left the development blueprints unchanged.

The site is one of only two remaining areas in the city earmarked for a cemetery. An undeveloped parcel near Madera Road is also set aside for a cemetery, city officials said.
