COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Rallies for Soccer Victory

UC Irvine rallied from a late two-goal deficit and beat Loyola Marymount in overtime, 4-3, in a nonconference men’s soccer game Wednesday at Loyola.

Junior Adel Afkarian scored two goals in a 13-minutes span, including the game-winner seven minutes into overtime for the Anteaters (7-1), who won their sixth consecutive game.

Loyola (2-5) took a 3-1 lead when Shane Gallagher and William Gast scored in the 73rd and 74th minutes.

P.J. Polowski scored his eighth goal of the season in the 77th minute and Afkarian tied the score in the 84th minute. Loyola didn’t take a shot in overtime.

In other nonconference men’s soccer:

UC San Diego 1, Southern California College 0--Chris Fong scored in the fourth minute for host UC San Diego. Goalie Brent Rogers had five saves for SCC (4-5), which outshot San Diego, 13-6.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 2, Loyola Marymount 1--Jenni Tanaka scored 33 minutes into the game to give the Anteaters (5-4) a 2-1 lead. Shawna Berke tied the score, 1-1, when she took an indirect free kick from Nicole Kelly and scored nine minutes into the game.

Judey Petix scored after a back-heel pass on a free kick by Trisha Abe, formerly of Mater Dei, five minutes into the game for Loyola (1-5-1).

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--Heather Collins had 18 kills for the host Gauchos (12-0, 4-0). Popi Edwards had 13 kills for the Anteaters (2-10, 1-4).

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Chapman 3, The Master’s 2--Lori Fuller had 24 kills and Shawna Parkinson had 14 for host Chapman (14-3), which won, 7-15, 9-15, 15-10, 15-9, 15-5.

Southern California College 3, CS San Bernardino 0--Celeste Young had 18 kills and Simon Burgesmier had 11 for the Vanguards (12-4), who won, 15-9, 15-5, 15-10.
